MARIA MAGDALENA
Cry Me a River.
Miriam, a professor, travels from Brussels to Barcelona for an important lecture on Maria Magdalena. She leaves her young daughter behind and takes the important decision to divorce from her husband. When she arrives at Barcelona airport a taxi is waiting for her, a taxi whose driver claims to be Jesus.
She was fourteen when she saw a picture of a woman in a textbook: her gaze turned skyward, her hair very long and golden. She was crying. As if rivers were running down her cheeks. Like in that song... Cry me a river. It fascinated her. She wondered why she was crying like that. And why she had that look on her face. She was told that she was Mary Magdalene, “a sinner who repents of her sins”.
Shortly afterwards she realized that this woman was much more important than she had been taught at school. And he began to pursue her.
Carme Portaceli and Michael de Cock concentrate on the character of Mary Magdalene, the symbol by far of erased women throughout history. They give her the importance that she deserves, and that so many women deserve, turning this biblical tale into a magical one.
